October 18 - 22, 2023 - Théâtre Marni - Brussels

To celebrate its thirtieth edition, the international acousmatic festival L'Espace du Son is totally free and open to all: acousmatic music (nothing to see, except a spatializing musician, but everything to imagine), a media art very much of our time that favors the illusion of sound images and immersion in the sound forest of our 82-speaker Influx acousmonium, meets all sensibilities and curiosities open to the technological arts.

This is written music, not with symbols on paper or digital memory (a system dating back to the twelfth century, practiced until the twentieth century in the West), but directly with synthesized and/or recorded sounds on magnetic (tape) and then numerical memory, organized and played back in audiovisual processing software.

It's all about music (organized sounds as defined by Edgard Varèse), with its specialized composers and patented by an international network of studios and teachers in conservatories and universities in Europe, North and South America, China, etc.

The festival offers participating audiences an exceptional experience:

• by the sound quality of the Influx acousmonium, developed over 40 years, which is further enhanced by the addition of a pair of very high-level loudspeakers (but, shhh...it's still a secret!),

• by the International Spatial Interpretation Competition Espace du Son, which, every evening at 7:30 pm, proves the relevance of the fundamental role of an interpreter, the same as an interpreter of classical instrumental or vocal music, applied to the specific world of acousmatics; this competition also provides an opportunity to revisit a few classics from the repertoire,

• by the great diversity of styles of the guest composers, according to their generation, cultural origins and professional backgrounds.

- Daniel Perez Hajdu <https://3vqr6.r.a.d.sendibm1.com/mk/cl/f/QkunmL6PeX8X9fr9G5YBj4GRyw7t6dYd0LH3PrR4BEj0M2ltQdvnbkNHWMBsUfCrmGfZOaKWj3Vf0dc3hqrkOZqveGhrvEN-xd7ignHmxyLLXCuYf4TIA2U1L5X2CV0mdOAQE_E_LoRLssEuOrM1P8UnP7O0b8UV2_oiEv303YClLzhoc875-g1_txqRRnU7Q5dltGWShS7dbk8kqVmOFFsbPfyD939NuIMV56chuLE4HHJDM4U> (Cuba/Belgium), currently professor of media writing techniques and acousmatic composition in the electroacoustic section of the Conservatoire Royal de Mons/ARTS2, has been developing a sincere body of work and uncompromising musical research for over 15 years.

- Julien Guillamat <https://3vqr6.r.a.d.sendibm1.com/mk/cl/f/G-ahrzVX2g5xG0sCFX2560TlX8SufPH7J2i3GqfGngOLEonQrdrKg97z7fVh09IFphaBZc2fLqt9xxcqwyGFFPKurNXGYoVq9_cRkvL6Gge7du1OgevOK1VHSzp7VSoMBtgSU2zSz2P2VCJ3DSL0Ps6knyvPej8eWPOyXI22QdE41KMmQSbVOaQ82kdoIbcwSWrGEr_YR2MNSESOzyv8An5tzY7lde5d0KWD_9ITvidcuS33> (France) has an impressive musical and academic background: cellist, musicologist, doctorate in electroacoustic composition under the direction of Jonty Harrison (University of Birmingham), founder and director of the acousmonium and the Klang! festival in Montpellier and the Europa Meta Orchestra, professor of spatialized interpretation at the Conservatoire Royal de Mons/ARTS2. He offers us a diversified fireworks display of his acousmatic works.

- Flô Menezes <https://3vqr6.r.a.d.sendibm1.com/mk/cl/f/5lZzjLzKjlSd_LVgVxSpxGLcefTBx8_x6P-V3j4AXdHwVPO8btni_6uRUMdwBDFAIoXXEa9AAscATGLMMRNsWqMQ3_8petScT40IxfD8Zu-2ld5_8QclxO2VfujFShbKWMsLwHbj7-GcDmshkbtGgxnyVDD7WRzsN0JrkQKlYo_NaO8fqIqRoHA4Of0xBT3hSar_GTp0scxdRgO7M12d-UGHAEAOzeCyl7vKhd4sqfMAz_Q> (Brazil) founded the best PANaroma studio in Brazil and the only Brazilian acousmonium, Puts, at Sao Paulo State University. Pianist and conductor, connoisseur of Luciano Berio and Karlheinz Stockhausen with whom he worked, author of several books and numerous analytical articles, his work is also instrumental and mixed. His acousmatic pieces are tinged with spiritual, social and poetic preoccupations, and his writing is complex, multichannel and polyphonic.

- Alex Buck <https://3vqr6.r.a.d.sendibm1.com/mk/cl/f/oYUpxojiK7-bRl7GLlvjBkBveqFOeXQKafgUZWTXw_K11S2Fo8x8_t_CveBO2Mv39K5jDaz01AWY-7pUrFkv9Xzy6qeMUewW5bIfQU3TKBCFzuuEK_rAKr6-UXjqACi8LPYgUBVNfRwiWSrSfu_ncaYFvHgw187gFFdjSSUKDpnz-Gg9oYYidfRVNyLvRelkmIF8bLgIbnjEyoFMBN_nYcaFtdXANG2MNE-BYoY> (Brazil), jazz percussionist, discovered acousmatics during his master's degree in composition with Flô Menezes. His acousmatic works, still few in number, are unique in that they have all won prizes and first prizes in competitions (Métamorphoses 2018 and 2020, Destellos 2022, Matera 2018, Musica Nova, Matera and Musicworks 2019); his musicality is natural and directly expressive, as each work expresses an idea close to his heart, centered on social and ecological issues.

- Vanessa Massera <https://3vqr6.r.a.d.sendibm1.com/mk/cl/f/Q6HUHLbbleEZIr7TO56jlpWVoRUa9tuds_nc7rfCOPXmHpHF2W4vN076leQwFDZpnjmrcsmJtFMb3U6vdeQxDErkzEEx1gb6FrP2DVbwKRDBA8mg0BIB4oA-UwUcaIybT_VV2tA14vyE50vWtiMFD_IAFJMy2mjq8STEORjYbJ7one9xnIG4dwvz0qsuO2KcATR4MhyQ64Dnj7WJ18EiSHpaFgNdhpyrmdDx8f94-ybGd2U> (Canada) is a young composer who graduated from the Conservatoire de Montréal and went on to earn a doctorate at the University of Sheffield (with Adrian Moore). Her debut album, "Fulgurances", released in 2022, echoes the themes shaking the world today: migration, resistance, complexity and chaos, natural and cultural environments.

- Stéphane Roy <https://3vqr6.r.a.d.sendibm1.com/mk/cl/f/01X2tqAaz0CH0WGRacjQdoMdaKnGkeRMozP5_sX7yxA-9FW9zdLhrL8ppBlq21TqdQ3xEUb5VtygAFtZK8L-ZgtQ09A-1CuE00YyGGFme3R5Na-Aj-PQeZmdlR-0FysBXymAx3lq0K0ibTDzxiYzybPfGccU66DVZZAFBjtX2EXVR37BSTsnPVe7XGjSVoZVfRM-bAPDjW7_rctD9aedrqwnfN9xv3S3P6B1KQHp0gaGRGU9Yw> (Canada), author in 2003 of an analysis method for electroacoustic music (published by L'Harmattan) that is still widely used, offers us a plastic music with highly worked morphologies, in an organization that leaves nothing to chance, allowing him to extract, after a long exploration of the sound material, expressive properties and imprint his works with their teleological movement.

• with two master classes, by Flô Menezes and Stéphane Roy, giving a clearer insight into the mysteries of some of their works,

• with a concert chosen and performed by former winners of the espace du son competition,

• with a post-concert video-music evening (video and sound by the same author).

All in good spirits, discoveries, reunions and discussions at the Théâtre Marni bar in Brussels.
